Birth Doula Packages

I am currently a mentored doula with Doula UK.

What is a Birth Doula?

Doulas provide continuous support for the whole family through pregnancy, birth, and in the early days of parenthood. We are there to listen, give confidence, and not judge. Offering information, advocacy, flexible, practical, and emotional support in homes as well as in hospitals to the whole family. We are non-medical support workers who can help to facilitate a more positive experience for the birthing woman or person.

Doulas do not advise, but provide informational support to enable you to make informed decisions about your maternity care.

Birth doulas support women, birthing people, and families who are planning all kinds of birth, from planned caesarean birth or early epidural to home water birth as well as different parenting choices. They do not take a clinical role but work alongside midwives and doctors.

There is evidence to show that having a doula can mean:

  • Reduced risk of Caesarean birth
  • Reduced risk of instrumental birth
  • Reduced need for painkillers or epidural during birth
  • Reduced rate of induction of labour
  • Shorter labour
  • Increased parental satisfaction with the birth experience
  • Increased likelihood of initiating breastfeeding
  • Increased likelihood of successfully establishing breastfeeding & breastfeeding at 6 weeks

My birth doula packages can be tailored to meet your needs but can include the following;

Antenatally, as your birth doula I will usually meet with you at least twice but try for 3 prenatal visits, and will be available for phone or email support as questions or concerns arise. You will have the opportunity to talk over any concerns, work out your birth preferences and get to know me, your doula.

I will then go ‘on call’ towards the end of pregnancy (typically around 38 weeks) and will then be available 24/7. I will then go to you when you ask during labour, typically before you transfer to a place of birth (if planning a hospital or birth centre birth) or the midwives arrive (with a home birth).

During Labour I will provide emotional, practical and informational support to you, adapting to what is needed. I am able to offer help and suggestions on comfort measures such as breathing, relaxation, movement and positioning. If applicable, I can also encourage the partner to participate in the birth to a level at which they feel comfortable. The doula’s most important role is to provide nurturing, continuous support and reassurance.

I will then stay with you until after baby is born and the new family are settled and happy. I like to prepare a meal in advance so you have something to nourish you on the evening after you’ve birthed your baby. I also bake you a groaning cake and power balls to give you energy and sustenance during and after the birth. If having a home birth, I like to tidy up your birthing space and leave your home tidy and back to normal.

As your birth doula I will carry out 2 postnatal visits with you, to support you as you settle in life with a new baby, help with infant feeding as needed and allow you an opportunity to talk over the birth.

Postnatal Doula Packages

Postnatal doulas typically start working with a family in the first few weeks and months after birth, but some doulas do work with families with older babies too. Sometimes postnatal doulas are booked antenatally, sometimes only when a family find they are struggling or feel the need for more support. The length of time a postnatal doula spends with a family varies enormously from the initial 6-8 weeks, to years!

Just as when supporting birth clients, postnatally doulas provide emotional, practical and informational support.

The actual tasks in the practical support postnatal doulas provide varies enormously, and one of the big benefits of having a postnatal doula is that they are there to support the family, not carry out a specific task, so they do what is needed (within reason!). This can be help around the house, looking after baby while mum (and her partner) nap, helping with older siblings, making meals, helping with dinner time or the school run, helping overnight so the parents get more sleep. Whatever is needed to help a family relax and have a positive experience of life with a baby.

Unlike a maternity nurse, a doula is not there to take care of the baby for you. Instead, a postnatal doula supports you to be the parent you want to be.
